We Regret

I had planned to dissect a computing technique here today, but due to time constraints, have decided to push that back. No half-assing it on this blog - we're committed to at least three-quarters of one.

More on this week - I've finally cleared out my corkboard, which was beginning to get overgrown, and the Milo TruckTM made a long-awaited reappearance at the Central Forum on the 29th, which shall henceforth be known as the beginning of the First Milo Truck Era. Long live the Milo TruckTM.

Got wind that a friend was diagnosed with cancer, which comes as a reminder to appreciate life more, even if many forms of cancer are not quite so scary nowadays (admittedly easy to say when you're not the one affected).

Another month, another wedding, this one with a not-exactly-that-uncommon relatives' altercation towards the end, often unavoidable when so many long-lost (perhaps for a reason) kin are reunited. Ah, the vitality of life. Still, this is probably preferable to the old-guy-dropping-dead I once witnessed.

Nipping back to local politics for a bit: Having mentioned two of the presidential candidates in a recent post, it is only fair that the other two are covered too. Dr. Tan Cheng Bock has held a thank-you parade and thence on to dignified silence, not ruling out running for the next edition, where he should be a frontrunner if there isn't another vote split setup.

Dang, it seems as if Herr Ahm actually got that right.

As for (liberal) opposition darling Mr. Tan Jee Say, he has been rather more active, and proclaimed his ambition to set up a coalition of opposition parties for the next General Elections.

But where have we heard this before?

It has to be said that the opposition record of sincere inter-party cooperation is not encouraging, with their scene often giving off the faint whiff of "too many wannabe chiefs and not enough willing Indians". In any case, I have it on Herr Ahm's authority that it is unlikely that the Workers' Party would be eager to dilute their hard-won reputation in this manner.

Herr Ahm's advice is for the coalition, whatever it is eventually called, to aim to actually win something. Don't go all "40-odd percent is a good showing" - mass firepower, get all your top veterans and best recruits together, forget differences and put together one bloody good all-star team and take one bloody GRC. Hey, even the grand old man of Singapore politics has already given you the permission!

Saying that, Herr Ahm does not expect much, and posits that it is more likely for infighting to erupt by then.

Mr. Ham (0/500 seeds): No comment. 100 seeds on Wolverhampton to beat Newcastle (at 2.40)

FAKEBERT: I have just hit upon a sure-win bet!

Mr. Ham: What's that?

FAKEBERT (424/500 seeds): 100 on Newcastle to beat Wolverhampton (at 2.60)!

Mr. Ham: HEY!
