Bun Year

"She's just too liberal to care about reality.
Let her get mugged in the name of diversity.
"
- Early contender for Post Of The Year

If his countrymen elect to erect a statue of him,
I would be willing to make a small contribution

The gentlemen above has hit upon an idea, I think. Edible armor should be a real morale booster. Not only that, he's doing his part to oust corrupt dictatorships and bring democracy to the Middle East. Yay!

Except that said regimes were largely supported by the US and the rest of the West, who figured that some siphoning of funds here and there was preferable to risking the entire region turning into a glass parking lot. Oops!

Democracy's nice and all, except when the popular vote could very well soon be for war...

Hambush from the front worked out

Mr. (PTE) Ham got a taste of that, after he found his lodgings brutally invaded by half an egg roll. He subdued the belligerent with exceptional valour, and utterly demolished it with his teeth. He was briefly promoted directly to Captain for his gallantry, before being demoted right back down for refusal to don bunny ears. Bunny ears are an instant upgrade for most things.

So, about this New Year - thought about visiting the Bedok SSC Gym, plan dashed as it closed at five pm. Also found out that Geylang United was based in Bedok, not Geylang. That's how out of touch I am...

Left: Mr. HamTire, Right: The New Ham

Visited my paternal grandparents, and saw that the HamTire has upgraded to a duplex, and gotten a new Winter White buddy. Unfortunately, he's also beginning to look his age, and has gained a penchant for biting.

Ran though several hands of Monopoly Deal (cut-priced Hong Kong Edition) with my siblings at night, before taking a dollar or so (uncollected) off them at Dai Dee, leading into Liverpool vs. Stoke at 4 am. Couldn't take more than the first half.

Watched Ip Man 2 on mio tv's free preview on CNY proper, which has the Brits replacing the Japs as the baddies. Purely from a sporting vantage, though, I put a pure boxer at a disadvantage against a martial artist with use of his legs...

Chomped down huge quantities of various goodies in the process of bulking up, and since it's forbidden to sweep the floor during this period, the hamsters served as my clean-up crew. Unleash Mr. Ham on a crumb-laden floor, and it's amazing how quickly he gets it spick-and-span.

First bun to the end wins

Friday night saw a 4O walkabout at the River Hongbao, topped off with a session of Dixit (thanks to twc lugging the games with him) at a Starbucks, which we turned into a Settlers/Minds Cafe for two cappuccinos. The first choice was actually Dominion, but there appeared little hope of getting the gist of the game across in the limited time we had.

Curious, I got my hands on a PC version, and after running through fifty-odd games in a couple of hours, I feel like I've got the basics down; the general idea is to first build up one's purchasing power by obtaining Treasure (Copper/Silver/Gold) cards and useful Action cards, to eventually win the game by accumulating the most number of Victory Points, usually through Victory cards.

The major part of the skill involved lies in balancing one's deck according to what Action cards are available, and what the opponents are doing. Since Victory cards score points but are mostly useless otherwise, a balance has to be struck between buying enough of them to win, but not so many so early that one's drawn hands are mostly dead. More comments after I get the time to play against humans...

Now for the EPL. Recall the "trip up...to rank underdogs like Wolves" observation? Well, it's just happened. Worse, it wasn't like Wolves were outstanding or anything either. Still, between a lacklustre 2-1 defeat and getting pegged back to 4-4 from being 4-0 up after 65 minutes, I might just pick the former.

Punting has become big business (or perhaps even bigger business) here, with the casino levies alone amounting to S$130 million for nine months last year. Sure puts my predictions in perspective.

P$50 on Chelsea to draw Liverpool (at 3.80)
P$50 on two goals in Chelsea vs. Liverpool (3.40)
