Many Faces

I've been kind-of-busy, Mr. Ham is still AWOL, and Mr. Robo on some super-secret-project, so this post is destined to be a short one.

Ugly Faces

One of the biggest news items of the week is the deplorable case of eighteen pedestrians/motorists ignoring a two-year old kid as she lay dying on the road after having been knocked down (and run over) by a van (and later by another lorry) [CCTV Video (warning - graphic)], until rescued by a rag-and-bone aunty. Impressively, she managed to hang on for a few days before finally succumbing to her injuries.

Following this story online generally leads in a few directions - most commentators (including some Chinese) decried the passers-by specifically and the Chinese people generally, with no lack of suggestions of painful things to be done to them; some of the guilty (which included a mother with her own child) swore blind that they didn't see her, but inspection of the video reveals that this is unlikely.

A minority went on the defence, mostly in two ways. First, by citing the 2007 Peng Yu case, where a nice man who helped an old lady after she fell while boarding a bus was ordered to pay her some 45000 yuan (approx. S$9000) in compensation, by a judge who ruled that it was "common sense" that Peng would not have helped her if he were not at fault.

Second, they gave the examples of similar cases that did not happen in China, most popularly perhaps those of Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax, who bled to death on a New York sidewalk after trying to defend a woman in a fight, of Edith Isabel Rodriguez, who was refused help in the lobby of a Los Angeles emergency room, and of a woman left unconscious by the roadside in London.

It is true that outright apathy is hardly a uniquely Chinese phenomenon, and tellingly, without the CCTV footage, it could well have become one of the dozens of "normal" cases of children being run over each day. However, two (or more) wrongs certainly don't make a right.

Figures, since it is nigh-impossible to gauge the intelligence/contributions of those far above oneself.

Fallen Faces

Berlusconi: "Bad news, we're running out of oil."

Gaddafi (now deceased): "Yo, whassup? I've got 40 billion barrels!"

Others: "Hmmmm..."

Footnote: A four-inch long rodent in camo fatigues was seen scuttling away from the scene of Gaddafi's demise, mostly missed by major news outlets.

Mystery Faces

Sneak preview of... something.
