Anatomy of a Massacre

In this breaking news update on the Oslo Massacre, investigative reporters FAKEBERT and Mr. Ham have uncovered the manifesto of accused killer Anders Behring Breivik, through a classified source codenamed "Google"; they would have labelled it as top secret, but for the small matter of the author generously encouraging it to be distributed in any way or form within the first dozen pages.

We might ask whether it is proper to give the perpetuator of such a heinous deed the attention that he sought. Unfortunately, history tells us that great fame surely follows great infamy, especially if it is desired - the ancient Greeks sought to obliterate the memory of Herostratus, who burnt down the Temple of Artemis in search of everlasting fame, but they clearly failed utterly.

A greater threat to the propagation of Breivik's thoughts would be the daunting task of reading some 1516 pages. Mindful of this, our commentators offer a very quick overview, together with commentary where felt relevant, bearing always in mind that they in no way condone his acts. They feel this reasonable, given that far more inflammatory writings have been de facto freely available on the Internet.

But first, who is Breivik? What is definitively known is that he is a 32 year-old Norwegian; while he describes himself as Christian, this is apparently in dispute, with many defenders of the faith adamant that no true Christian would do such a thing, so we'll let this slide for now, despite the issue being central to his manifesto. To the delight of conspiracy theorists everywhere, he's also a Freemason, though his lodge has been quick to disown him.

The manifesto is entitled "2083 - A European Declaration of Independence", divided broadly into an introduction of some forty pages, followed by:
  • Book One - which says that much of taught history is false and filled with "cultural Marxist" and multiculturalist propaganda, weighing in at a relatively brief 239 pages
  • Book Two - which continues rants against multicultural-Marxism, with feminism, egalitarianism and a dash of other isms thrown in, and the problems that Europe faces (spoiler: Islam)
  • Book Three - declaration of pre-emptive war, promoting a conservative revolution, refounding of the Knights Templar, and a ton of strategy, comprising about half the book, with a personal Q&A towards the end
The writing is generally of very good technical quality, and given that Breivik claims credit for about half of it, it is difficult to paint him as a dumb fanatic, especially with English being his "secondary language". He begins by belittling political correctness, which is backed by a skippable thesis on its history. Personally, he could have replaced all that fluff with a single quote from about 700 pages in:

"If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.

We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.
"

- Karl Popper

He then goes into how Islamic atrocities have been glossed over in modern times with reference to many case studies (with heavy citations) - e.g. (alleged) Armenian/Greek/Assyrian/Coptic genocides. The reader should be forewarned not to take all this at face value, though. For instance, while the manifesto lists Hindu Kush as "the largest genocide in the history of man", quoting the 1987 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica as stating that it means "Kills the Hindus", this does not appear anywhere on the main Wikipedia page, with some of the opinion that it is a slander.

However, it is quite undeniable that Muslims (and Christians for that matter) have killed a significant number of people in the name of their religion in the past, but Breivik is eager to set it straight that they are not quite equal in terms of historical atrocities (guess who was badder faction in his eyes?) He admits it well-known that Christianity has been guilty of numerous temple destructions and persecutions, but states that Islam is worse (and he'll explain why).

After a primer into Islam 101, he states that while the Crusades were bloody, they were justified in liberating Eastern Christians (i.e. a defensive/reactive mission), while jihads were offensive acts. He then accuses peaceful Muslims of being hypocrites, and without missing a beat excuses violent passages in the Bible as having "greater interpretative freedom", and states that it is through Christ, Prince of Peace, that Christianity interprets its scriptures, conveniently throwing out the entire Old Testament in one swoop.

It is then, naturally, impossible for Islam to reform as Christianity did, since Islam is to Breivik basically intolerant and expansionary, whereas the essence of Christianity was Christ and his Apostles (note, however, the silence on the behaviour of God the Father before that). Long-drawn and probably questionable tracts on various genocides follow.

Eventually, he moves on to decrying multiculturalism (a useful study in the local context), and asks why it the concept is so unassailable in Europe, whereas other nations (e.g. China, Japan) are not supporting it. His complaint is not so much about immigration per se, but a wider refusal to integrate, in particular desiring the benefits of a (largely secular) First World while insisting on retaining religious practices brought over from the Third. Happily, this is not the case in Singapore, especially just prior to major elections.

The manifesto is not completely devoid of facts, it has to be said, and Saudi Arabia's well-documented blood money rates caused an eyebrow to be raised; the life of a Muslim man is worth a hundred thousand riyals, while that of a Christian or Jew is only worth half that, while others, presumably including agnostics, are only valued at six thousand-odd. Females, as is only proper, go at a fifty percent discount.

It is a measure of our former MM's influence that he is quoted here, in saying that it is demography and not democracy that will shape growth and security in the 21st century (page 571). Breivik alleges that the official percentages for Muslims in Europes are understatements, and he projects that by 2050, they will comprise a majority in France, helped by having a fertility rate of some 3.3 children per woman, as compared to the non-Muslim average of only 1.3 (see local case).

Here, we might note that Breivik's theoretical concerns are not actually completely outlandish - no less than German chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French president Nicolas Sarkozy have publicly acknowledged the failure of multiculturalism (see? Singapore is more competent than Europe!). It basically goes back to Popper's quote above - yes, you can privately believe that your pals, who objectively are decent law-abiding citizens, are doomed to eternal damnation simply because they don't believe in the same God as you all you want, but please just be discreet about it, thank you very much.

Skipping forward, Breivik's solution is simple, if very offensive: kick all Muslims out of Europe, while allowing willing Muslims to assimilate fully by conversion (including adopting Christian names), followed by demolishing all mosques (again, this sentiment is not completely unfounded, with Switzerland for instance banning the construction of new minarets starting 2009); now, to be fair, it has to be reminded that churches and houses of worship of other religions have never been allowed in some Islamic states...

History on the Knight Templars (of Crusades fame) follows, with instructions on how to form terror cells (as it happens, Breivik was successful with his "Solo Martyr Cell", with authorities admitting that they were completely blindsided by so unlikely a suspect), funding operations (the 9/11 cells were stated to have run on only half a million, and Breivik put his own expenses as 317000 Euros, though with 187500 accounted by "loss of income"), avoiding suspicion (apparently, World of Warcraft is an acceptable explanation for lengthy disappearances from society), keeping motivation up (with suggested music), and the usual Internet Warrior cribs on good weapons, armour and bomb creation. There is also a cute section on medals and decorations, which only proves Napoleon right.

Well, it has to be said that whatever else Breivik is, he is methodical; indeed he reminds me slightly of the assassin in one of my favourite novels, The Day of the Jackal.

As I assume my readers have no particular interest in the intricacies of nuclear, chemical or biological warfare, we can skip to his musings on family and marriage (traditional, should be based more on duty than love), race mixing (bad, leads to mental defects [really?]), preservation of the (recessive genetically) "Nordic tribes" (where have we heard that before?) and oh, Hitler (hated, but only because his actions resulted in multiculturism in Europe - according to the author, he should have liberated Jerusalem, which was well within his power, instead of going for world domination)

Breivik concludes with his personal story, which begins by noting that where he was brought up, Muslim guys were allowed to fool around with ethnic Norwegian girls, who in turn viewed Norwegian guys' tolerance as weakness (see Taxonomous); Muslim girls were, of course, completely off limits. This little extract alone I would say explains a lot, as well as the eight unprovoked assaults in Oslo he suffered, supposedly by Muslims, described later on.

He then describes his initial motivation as the NATO action against Serbians in Kosovo, and also his government's "cowardly" handling of the Muhammad cartoon issue. He correctly predicts that he will be detested as a murderer and terrorist, but states that it is only because of his "self insight, ideological and moral confidence and strength" that he is willing to make his (twisted) sacrifice.

A ton of personal information, including the schools he attended, a detailed bio and his World of Warcraft clan are included, so it should be easy to verify the authenticity of the document, which ends with a chronological log of his operation, beginning 2002 but only really taking off from 2010.

Having skimmed through all that, a few glaring questions remain, foremost which is why the heck did he place strategy in a public manifesto? While it is true that some of it is hard to stop even with foreknowledge (e.g. the "single cell" system), there is still far, far too much detail for his plans to come to fruition now.

The second is why he shot up dozen of teenagers at a youth camp, even if it belonged to a political party that supported multiculturalism; if a mere bombing was felt not to be sufficiently attention-grabbing, one would suppose, from his writings, that a mosque would have been a more natural target. We may yet find out in the coming days.

Thirdly, why did he do it in Norway, his home country? Oh... (sadly, their prison digs look more comfortable than my room)

RIP to the victims.
