Browser bookmarks getting cluttered, have my hands kinda-full... you know what's coming - a big fat list! But before that, some words from our sponsors, following the celebrated "this does not f**king slip now!" speech from Steven "Kieran Richardson has more league titles than me" Gerrard. And of course, a couple of weeks later, this just had to happen, furthering my regret that Mourinho was not in contention for the United post. Yes, it's not over yet, even if City snuck past Everton last night, but as a United fan: haha! Thought of reviving EPL Tales for this, but that would be too... cheap. Ashamed that this was the high point of the season And how hard can management be, anyway, when you've got the personnel? ![]() (Source: Somewhere on the Internet) While Guardiola's finding life a little tougher nowadays, it's still easy street compared to the deep shit United are in, from recent evidence. Heck, Sunderland could well have beaten them 3-0 clear and free at Old Trafford, if not for the woodwork! There's sad, and then there's sad. But enough of that. And also of the actual xenophobia (oft fanned in our favourite hardware forum) that saw plans by Filipino expats to celebrate their Independence Day being vehemently protested (though there might have been some unfortunate phrasing involved). This blustering has extended to nitpicking over the display of flags on signages, which while possibly technically illegal, is largely bone-picking. [Aside: Saudi Arabia is criticizing Norway over human rights. After picking my jaw off the floor, I read on... and learnt that it's basically because those sneaky Scandinavians aren't acknowledging the Saudi state religion as the One True Faith. That's that then. I'm sure that they'll be happy to hear that the Sultan of Brunei appears to have really taken to it (after his.. more havoc younger days). Well, age does that to the best of us, but personally I hope to emulate Voltaire's Last Quip] Which is not saying that the regrettable growing resentment towards foreigners emerged from a void - as an NMP reminded us last week, immigration remains the biggest issue here, since most of the other hot-button issues can be traced back to it. And this reminds me, every single time I begin to get a slightly better opinion of The State's Times, they do something to remind me of just how much bullshit they are willing to spew. Take yesterday's feature: ![]() (Source: ST Online) You heard it: Seventy per cent of local workers want to work beyond 65, even with salary cuts (yay!). Doubtless, this authoritative statement will be repeatedly recycled by our ministers and policy-makers, who will point to it as evidence that Singaporeans are dying for employment. "Such a view is shared by many older Singaporean workers", you know? Well, the preview conveniently cuts off before the survey methodology is revealed, and no surprises, it is of the usual State's Times standard (which has previously found, among other things, that youngsters like to pay higher premiums, and Punggol East loves the incumbents): "Of the 50 workers aged above 55 interviewed by The State's Times yesterday, 70 per cent said they want to work beyond 65, even if it means getting less pay." What can you say to that? I mean, they could have just used the findings from a reputable third party, which found just last month that 37% of the 6546 Singaporean employees polled want to retire by 55, and just seven percent (not seventy, mind you) want to work past 65? Or another survey over 1000 respondents that reveals that 61% want to retire by sixty - but that wouldn't be quite nation-building enough, would it? I'll leave the detailed analysis for next time... Not too much movement on the Bitcoin end for the hamsters, as China continues their cat-and-mouse game with the exchanges. In an interesting development, there is an initiative at MIT to distribute US$100 in Bitcoin to each of their undergrads, with the support of faculty. Choo-choo? Sadly, sensitivities have extended to academia here, with some bemoaning the fact that a minority of faculty are local in some departments. Personally, though, this complaint is not particularly appropriate, since we are realistically unlikely to produce sufficient experts in every subdomain. I'd settle for comprehensible enunciation, clarifying the bond issue and fixing up the grade curve to give graduates that tiny boost, but then again Walmart's already more selective than Harvard. Ok, ok, the list:
