I Must Be Joking

"God didn't create the world in seven days... he slacked off for six and then pulled an all-nighter."
- Least I Could Do

Well, exactly one week remains for my FYP, and I reckon I did no less than a quarter of it (though I also had the poor foresight to code a bunch of other, unused stuff) yesterday (31 March). And no, this is not an April Fool's joke.

Frankly, I'm not too sure what's wrong with me. Why didn't I rush it out a couple of months ago, and leave myself with ample time to do the survey and report? I do have some theories about my predicament:

  1. Shiokness! It is not often I can get an adrenaline rush, so I might as well make the most out of it by leaving things late. Safer than rushing onto the expressway dodging cars.

  2. Lack of motivation. A+ = C where my honours classification/grad school admissions are concerned, and frankly I doubt anybody would bother with the thesis after my evaluators are done with it. And not that anybody will really care about the honours classification after a few years, either.

"But hey, as a student, shouldn't you be putting in the effort? Do you study for the knowledge or the grades, huh?"

Well, yes, and as effort goes I haven't been completely slacking either - I estimate at least over a hundred hours plonked into the FYP, all things considered. And no, the 25% yesterday refers to 25% of what can actually be presented, so this isn't a contradiction.

As for the knowledge or grades things, ironically I am much happier coding stuff that won't be marked (see all the blog enhancements, for one).

  3. Laziness. My vice.

  4. Lack of inspiration. Frankly, I wasn't sure if what I was doing was useful at all, but this is a relatively minor point since I would likely be much more inspired had I been motivated. Then again, having read a number of other FYP theses, I suspect that mine will be no less useful than some of them, so...

Should have communicated more with my advisor on hindsight.

Whatever will be, will be; the good news is that I've learnt what not to do in grad school, and I'll get this millstone off my neck in a week. Yay! Won't gain much sympathy on FMyLife (link by lawrence), but I like to think that I deserved it :P
