Roundup Part Two

Felt like an off-Saturday update, so here goes.

Went shopping for a pair of running shoes at Queensway yesterday in preparation for the January IPPT, as I was not quite prepared to stake my feet on alternative theories just yet. Picked up a pair of Mizuno Wave Nexus 4s that felt right, though of course it'll come down to my own stamina in the end. One lady mentioned to the shop assistant that she was looking for something for Sunday's marathon. Good luck to her, I see blisters in her future.

Also bought a tube of badminton shuttlecocks for the first time since goodness knows when. I confess that I have never given much thought to their quality, save the obvious discrepancies between known brands (Yonex, Victor) and the no-name producers. I mean, it's a wad of feathers, you hit it, it flies, right? Turns out that there's an entire range, with corresponding characteristics. And I thought only squash balls varied in speed...

Dinner after basketball (not that it might help - horror! nah, don't buy that) with family at the Different Taste restaurant, which while not that different, was pretty alright. One of my dad's friends had a pet shop nearby, and the hamsters got something out of it:

WITH DHA AND OMEGA 3

Went swimming in the morning with alvin, and chanced in on the 3rd World Junior Wushu Championships at the sports complex. No sign of yiren. Watched sanda and taolu side-by-side, and was slightly disappointed that they hadn't adopted a "Round X, Fight!" call to start the matches.

Isn't this... Virtua Fighter?

Walked home and spotted these buns all in a row at the pet shop:

Ok, this is too much

All in good time, in good time.

Kanazawa's (remember this?) non-politically correct theories got an airing in today's newspapers, on his new book, Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature. Actually, the big shock factor to me is that almost all of these points appear recycled from his previous book, but hey, a researcher's got to make a living somehow.

I had forgotten to mention the England vs. Russia spat for the 2018 World Cup in the last post. As we all know, Russia won, and England realised that they cheated. What's new? One wonders if the honourable Englishmen could have gotten used to it.

The thing is, I personally feel that there deserves to be a big novelty factor in selecting new World Cup hosts - frankly, going purely by infrastructure, accessibility and fan following, one of the big European nations would win the bid almost every time; FIFA could have just made it very clear that never having hosted an edition before should count as a huge advantage in the final reckoning.

But eh, it's not as if lobbying and collusion are the overriding factors in the selection process; an open auction for the rights would cut to the chase and be far more honest methinks. ("Do I see a bid of 10 million francs from England? Going once... is that Mr. Abramovich laughing and lighting his cigar with a cheque for 20 million francs? Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner...")
