I seem to have become a magnet for SBS bus captains; after the translation request last week, another one asked about my schooling hours after I boarded his service from the university at about noon, to get some shut-eye back home. Guess he doesn't know that three-day weeks are possible, even with six or more modules... And thanks to the nice cabbie uncle who cut sixty cents off my fare to Maju Camp to take my IPPT; I think I made a net profit off that one. As for how the test itself went, I'll leave it for next week. Hint: ran at Chinese Garden for the first time in umpteen years this morning. Still nothing too much there, other than a few more statues and tortoises. And a couple of Q&As that have stuck in my mind: I was once asked for the reason behind my interest in pattern recognition by a prof. My reply was that it was easy, which wasn't quite what I wanted to convey. I meant that it should be easy, which is something else altogether. Why should things that are so easily done by an average human, be so seemingly hard for computers? I was also asked about my major research interest by another prof. My answer was: problem solving. Which means that, I would prefer to have a concrete issue in front of me, then settle it by any means necessary, rather than develop a technique, and then search for an application (i.e. get a solution in search of a problem) - which can be thought of as a bottom-up vs. top-down approach, or the other way round, depending on where one stands. Pretend Punting returns: P$100 on Manchester City (-1.5) vs. Wolvehampton Wanderers (at 1.85) Next: Four Letters
