Come On Now

Built with Rage Builder

These glasses are certainly not made for playing - a quick shake of the head, and off they come. They may be quite useful for coaches wishing to keep their trainees looking up and surveying the surrondings, though.

Fitness update time. According to my records, I've been to the gym 28 times in the past five months, or an average of 5.6 times a month. The program I was on actually called for three workouts a week, so I've only been going at half the recommended frequency (or slightly more, considering the month-long break around the examination period).

Keeping in mind less-than ideal sleep times (hello, 2 a.m.), this is the progression in my self-experimentation thus far:

Start (February)Now
Squat3x5x50kg3x5x82.5kg
Bench Press3x5x30kg3x5x60kg
Deadlift1x5x50kg1x5x95kg
Military Press3x5x20kg (v.v. sad)3x5x30kg (v. sad)
Bent-over Row3x5x40kg3x5x52.5kg
Notation: (sets)x(reps)x(weight)
Bodyweight70kg72.5kg
Neck14"14.5"
Upper Arms10.5"11"
Forearms10.5" (R) 10" (L)11" (R) 10.5" (L)
Chest35"37"
Waist31"32"
Hips35"37"
Thigh21.5" (R) 21" (L)22.5" (R) 22" (L)
Calves14.5"15"
N.B. All measurements taken cold, unflexed
Standing Vertical*18"21"
*Extremely rough estimation using the net of a basketball hoop & own measured reach. Started out barely able to touch the bottom of the net, assumed 18"

N.B. The starting figures were generally a bit lower than what was possible (except perhaps the standing military press), following the program specifications.

The weights are clearly nothing to shout about, but at least I qualify as a novice now, if this source is to be believed (and assuming that a weight lifted for five reps will be about 85% of the one-rep max).

Some observations on the exercises:

  • It's easy to "progress" overly quickly on the squat, since it's the only exercise that occurs every workout, and the recommendation is to add weight each time. At one point, I was up to 95kg, but then realised that I was down to a quarter squat (i.e. going down maybe a quarter to half of the full range-of-motion)
  • In general, it is easy to inflate numbers by sacrificing form (not that mine is particularly good...). For example, the beginning half of the bench press is by far harder than the ending half (as with the squat), so quite a bit more weight can be lifted by only doing the easier half. This might be useful for those who know what they are doing, but not so good when tracking progression
  • Bench press: Can't feel the chest as much as I would like, it all seems to fall on the forearms
  • Deadlift: Ah, the fun one. Could probably pull somewhat more if I really went for it, but I'm not about to rush it.
  • Military Press: The disappointing one. Low numbers partly down to coordination, I guess; the same weight can be done rather more comfortably with dumbbells
  • Bent-over row: Also rushed the weight and lost form, had to reset
  • Upper arms (which lagged badly from the start) improving very slowly (somewhat to be expected, since there is no direct arm work). I'll see how it goes...
  • Jumping: Not much improvement either, but no care for now. Re-evaluate when hit a true 5x100kg for squat
  • Lifting seriously improves appetite! Not as much as swimming, but still...
And on the gym:

  • Despite there being a dozen or more specialised exercise machines, I have hardly seen anybody using them
  • There's always somebody on treadmills though
  • The "regulars" appear to be focused on upper body lifts, especially with dumbbells/curl bars
  • Oh, and countless flat/incline/decline bench presses on the only Smith machine, which somehow is nearly always in use when I get there :(
  • On the bright side, the power rack is often available. However, it happens to have what appears to be the only set of chin-up bars in the entire gym affixed to it

Steam-ed

Bought SimCity 4 (yes, old game) on Steam, my first game purchase since CiV. Haven't found the time to get back into it (or Shogun 2, for that matter), but heck, they deserve my custom.

And on the matter of CiV, I didn't really want to say it, but this seems to ring true:

And you're supposed to be delighted if the original game is playable out of the box (Source: Somewhere on the Internet)

You have no proof of that!

Seen on an NUS noticeboard

A quite brilliant idea, actually.
