An End

Mr. Ham: Hee, I've got a... why are you sitting there looking like that?

Me: Have you ever stood before a closed and locked door, Mr. Ham?

Mr. Ham: Not exactly, except for the time where... never mind. Why?

Me: I stood before a locked door for four thousand days, and today, it disappeared.

Mr. Ham: My condolences. Are you sure?

Me: I have seen it with my own eyes, and confirmed that four thousand of my days are not worth even a single chance.

The lesson that lasted twelve years is now understood. With no regret, but some small disappointment, I have to believe how little indeed they care about such things; they of so much of the word, yet of so little of the spirit.

Mr. Ham: I see. I'm sorry.

But pray tell me, if she had unlocked the door after a thousand days, would you have forgiven her?

*silence*

Two thousand?

*silence*

Three thousand?

*silence*

Four thousand?

*silence*

You hate her?

Me: *smiles sadly* You misunderstand. There is nothing to forgive. It was a valuable lesson well learnt. I suppose taking so long to realise it simply reflects on my stupidity.

So be it. I lower my head. Thus a dreamer bows to Mammon and the glories of this world, having sampled of bitter knowledge from a beloved hand.

Unwillingly released, I shall do what I must from here on.

Mr. Ham: See, if you had been an asshole like me, none of this would have happened.

...

Mr. Ham: ...well, aren't you going to squeeze me for that?

Me: It pains me to admit this, but you may be right, Mr. Ham.
