So, that was 2013. Rather undistinguished, if I may say. Long problem short, it's down to not really wanting anything; this form of equanimity is, however, quite unsuited to this stage of life. One does envy those who have managed to maintain that state of forthrightness - "if I do this, my problems will be solved". Let's say I finally graduate; then what? Blankness looms. That said, a number of longtime lab members have recently moved on, so I should really be thinking of the next step. The sole consolation is that I have never quite doubted that I can achieve it, though the treatment too often turns out to be similar to that for the thing in my arm - just bear with it until it gets too irritating. As a problem-solving approach, this is certainly disappointing, but old habits die hard. One recurring theme on getting things done what happens when a task appears overwhelmingly "big" and too intimidating to begin on, which leads to day after day being largely wasted. The irony is, of course, that if one just completes a teeny fraction properly each day, it would have been finished satisfactorily within weeks. Strangely, this is seldom a factor in personal projects (e.g. the blog software) And on the arm, I couldn't resist removing the dressing the day before the follow-up, and found that it was a tiny incision, barely more than a centimetre long, closed with two stitches. On the happy side, the biopsy result was that it was some vascular malformation, and explicitly not cancerous. Perhaps I should have requested the surgeon to take the other (non-painful) lump out too, as I suspect that compression might have something to do with it, but what do I know. I have to give it to the professionals - they even have special blades to remove the surtures. All in all, I've got to commend Alexandra Hospital for the overall experience. The only possible nitpick would be the short wait, but that can't be helped. Same goes for the staff member at the Jurong West Library who took the initiative to inform me that books can be renewed online, while I was paying my fines. I considered telling him that I view it as an incidental tithe to the system, but then I suppose that would sound silly. It's not always easy - when I was at the polyclinic for my initial consultation, there was an old guy in the next room who was adamant on being prescribed three months' medication at a go, referencing the cost of each visit and the inconvenience for his mother. Sadly, these things are not so straightforward. Small peeve - they've gone and renamed Skeleton King to Wraith King in Dota 2, and replaced the iconic model with a decidedly non-skeletal one. What's with that? Farming up a four-digit critical just won't be the same again. And Windrunner to Windranger? Ugh. Well, 'twas the season and all that. Cheers. Next: First Of The Next
