Civvies Redux

That's this year's high-key ICT done with, and since it became a short weekend, I'll make this quick. Now, the people were nice enough, but let's face it, most everyone likely has better things to do - never quite took to regimentation myself. Alright, I get it that it's necessary, though one hopes that one never actually has to use what one has picked up - 一将功成万骨枯; that said, the major skill refreshed this time round was how to inhale dust while supporting a helmet with my head.

On the more positive side, there was the pigging out at Buffet Town before hanging out at a shisha cafe in the Arab Street area on nights out (no, didn't try it myself, maybe some other time), as well as the much-appreciated expedited outprocessing. For once, they've figured out that it's not actually necessary to queue hundreds of servicemen up in two long-ass lines, simply to exchange their camp pass for their identity card! Unfortunately, this announcement came after the ending survey had concluded, or I would have bumped their efficiency score up a couple of points for this alone.

Another plus point's the new IPPT regime, which has reduced the menu to three stations - push ups, sit ups and the 2.4km run. Apparently, the change was made due to the old system discouraging those who simply couldn't pass a particular station (most often the standing broad jump) from trying at all. Given that thirty each of push and sit ups and a 14:50 run would be sufficient to pass, I'd say it's very doable.

Oh, and it seems that some of the NS kiddos might have appropriated the SAF Business Centre for LAN gaming. Well... I do understand the attraction of that sort of thing.

Cohesion day also saw archery tag make an appearance, which involved two teams shooting foam-tipped arrows at each other across a tennis court. It works as you'd expect, but also had the rule that if an arrow is caught, the person who fired it is out instead. Sadly, this was not attempted all that often.

But please, don't try this for real.

Also, an alternate win condition was that a team could shoot out four (small and firmly-attached) targets instead of eliminating the other side, but this was soon disdained by the participants. For, as another watcher sagely observed, we're all little boys at heart (but, given the current fear-based cover-backside politically-correct climate, playing Cowboys and Injuns might well get a child suspended from school)

Lastly, I gained a sudden craving for chilled Red Bull, after a fortuitous can in the field, and bought a six-pack on the way home only to later realise that it was too much of a good thing (trivia: beverages can be a... fiercely contested business)
