Slips And Quips

One of my former lab members returned to present for his hedge fund employers at the career fair yesterday, which put local tech salaries in perspective again (as raised by a senior). On a perhaps not wholly unrelated note, employers here are up in arms over frequent job-hopping plaguing productivity, but this should be considered in light of said hopping actually working - if an employer's only willing to dole out a 3% increment, when a switch can bring perhaps a 20% pay hike, how the heck should they expect loyalty, if no significant additional training had been involved?

That said, the Hays salary survey from last year indicating that 70% of local employees want to jump ship felt slightly excessive; still, I'd say it's worth considering taking our current "labour union" head's advice, and GTFO from here once my ongoing project is done with.

Election-wise, the pace is definitely picking up - it's barely two days into election season, and there have already been plenty of newsworthy snapshots. It's a great time to be alive for armchair pundits, with several sources offering live streaming of all the rallies (interestingly, Triple H has more viewers than the incumbents, make what of that you will), and we present some of the best highlights of the campaigns thus far, for your viewing pleasure:

Winner For Now

"The PAP... I mean the MND, sorry, Freudian slip..."
[Facebook] [HWZ]

Runner-Up Soundbite Burn Award

Are we legislative representatives, or estate managers?
(Source: forums.hardwarezone.com.sg)

Too bad about party affiliation here.

Mainstream Media Meaningful Photo Collage Award

How hard can this be after the Transport portfolio?
(Sources: mustsharenews.com & newnation.sg)

Headscratching Animal Analogies Award

"Singapore is a unicorn among nations."
(Sources: ur.fanpop.com & computer.howstuffworks.com)

I mean, I'd understand a lion, though this is not their natural range, or even the Merlion - or, at a huge stretch, a poisoned shrimp. But why did the PM throw out the best description of the country as an ultra white horse?

Not only that, after dubbing the opposition as "a mouse in the house", guess who the hamsters are supporting?

Unfortunate Dead Horse Award

Stop abusing corpses lah.

Not Exactly Donkeys Award

Say what you want, the credentials of SingFirst's Jurong candidates are pretty respectable.

The Chee Soon Juan Rebranding Award

Appears well-mellowed...

The Chee Hong Fisting Award

Never mind, we will "take care" of you!

Again, I don't much care for the jeering of candidates (Marine Parade edition) or the defacing of posters - dun like them, dun vote for them lah - but then again, I suppose this might have been calculated to dispel any lingering "climate of fear". On the other hand, waving a clenched fist about won't do the newbie's political reputation many favours.

The Start 'em Young Washing Brains Award

White is Good! The White Man is your friend!
(Source: forums.hardwarezone.com.sg)

Never quite understood how having a political party kindergarten ever passed - what's next, Workers Party Nursery? - but it's nation-building I suppose.

Prospective Damsel In Distress Award

...on second thought, I tahan myself better.

Chivalry's still alive here!

Wooden Spoon Award

Eh Kenneth, you're not going to get out of this so easily.

You know you're not doing very well, when your opponents helpfully point out mistakes in your nomination forms to avoid a walkover. Not only that, one of their members exhorted supporters to "vote for PAP" before checking himself, while another one managed "vote for Workers..." while getting the verbal smackdown from an auntie. I tend to have a soft spot for the underdogs, but this is a bit too much.

Which brings us to how J.B. Jeyaretnam's past victories in the of-course-now-defunct Chinese-majority Anson ward should be considered as evidence that quality minority candidates can win in SMCs (i.e. the GRC system is mostly bullshit); any racial-advantage conclusions drawn from, say, the Hong Kah North contest should take into account priors (2011's winning margin was some 70% to 30% already against a Chinese challenger), as well as the incumbent strength in the West.

Famous Last Words Award

[On the S$14500 election deposit, in a *three-way fight*]
"It's 12.5 percent, it's an easy target."
(Source: straitstimes.com)

It's his right, but some are - probably rightly - suspicious.

The Hammer Time Award

Well, not many contestants for this one.
