Better Luck Next Time

A journalist asked Sir Bobby Charlton how England's World Cup winning team from 1966 would have played versus Iceland, and Charlton answered that they would have won one-nil. "Only one-nil?" the journalist asked. "Yeah, most of us are over seventy years old by now..."

Mr. Ham: *tears up betting slip* Bah, so much for Belgium getting into the easier half of the bracket, "just as planned" - they then had to blow it against Wales, after taking a cracking lead. Eh, I suppose if Leicester City can win the league, anything can happen...

Me: And, England got eliminated by Iceland. Iceland! With a population of barely three hundred thousand!

Mr. Ham: Meh, it was England, what did you expect?

Me: Still, it makes one wonder if we could possibly aim higher, having over ten times their population. But still - really, England. No need for such haste over Brexit... frankly, I can't come up with another international side that has underperformed as consistently as the Three Lions for the past two decades at least, and it's not like they appear to have learnt any lessons either. At this rate, they might as well give Cantona a shot, it's not like he can do much worse.

Ok, Argentina arguably never lived up to expectations either, with Messi's retirement leaving his claim to Pelé and Maradona-level absolute all-time legend status hanging, IMHO...

Brighter news on the United front, with Zlatan confirmed, Mkhitaryan (spelt: Mk-hit-a-Ryan) very close, Eric Bailly in, and Paul Pogba looking more and more a realistic possibility; if Mourinho's and Ibrahimović's records are any indication, United should finally be there or thereabouts this time. Who knows, I might even fork out for the subscription... eh, forget it, Singtel will probably try to raise it from S$60/month.
