Very Short Stories

Second Chances

On Thursday, I had just boarded the bus for campus, when I got wind that a Snorlax had literally plopped onto my doorstep. While this didn't hurt that much, since I had recently hatched one from an egg, and then caught another in the neighbourhood, missing it by five minutes still rankled.

As it turned out, I managed to nab one that spawned right beside the Jurong Regional Library as the bus passed by it, and then a fourth (and the fattest of all to boot) in the university later. This could be a metaphor for something.

The Long Scenic Route

For my IPPT at Maju Camp, I walked across campus to the Kent Ridge MRT station, took the Circle Line up to Buona Vista MRT, then the East West Line to Clementi MRT, where I transferred onto Bus No. 154 for the final leg of the journey.

It was only on the way back home, when it struck me that I could have taken Bus No. 151 directly from the bus stop opposite the Central Forum, a couple of minutes from the lab, straight to the camp; however, I did get my first Sandslash out of it. This might be another metaphor for something else.

Upkeep Is The Tricky Part

No, I'm not leaving the topic of public transport yet. It's hard not to get the impression that the train system is gradually falling apart, with an MRT disruption stemming from a dislodged platform screen door followed by an announcement that the Bukit Panjang LRT might be scrapped, apparently as the operator can't figure out how to fix it, as usual.

One could hope that SMRT's nationalisation in all but name will usher in some positive change. And not a moment too soon, after the hapless CEO was yelled at during a shareholders' meeting, as being "worse than Saw Phaik Hwa" (who was at least good with property speculation). Not only that, even the electronic voting system broke down during said meeting, which sums it all up really.

About the Central Forum, it's just been renovated (and done up pretty nicely, in my opinion). Then again, it wasn't exactly falling apart (see former appearance), and if other public works around home are any indication, one has to suspect that some of it may be make-workish. The widening of the pedestrian paths has to be unequivocally beneficial, though.

A side observation from the work done - both at home and on campus - is the seeming trend towards larger tiles. Personally, I'm not sure why previous builders were intent on using tiles barely longer than an inch each side, to cover huge surfaces like walls and floors; surely it would be much easier and faster, to lay bigger ones?

The Dissemination Of Academic Ideas

For all the talk about e-learning, lecturers and tutors sure appreciate class attendance, if quiz questions both here and overseas are anything to go by.

And other times, they just wanna have fun.

Science Is Hard

Everyone has their off-days, it's perfectly normal to fail and make mistakes... well, the reversible ones, anyway. And it gets real tricky with systematic errors, such as the recently-discovered fMRI software faults, that likely have impacted over a decade of research, and thousands of studies.

Eh, at least some of us have an out.

In Pursuit Of Innovation

In a follow-up to our August review, consciousness-enhancing drugs are making a return to Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, Apple and Elon Musk are conspicuously missing from the big boys' A.I. partnership. Frozen out, or secretly ahead?

Assistance Required

Just when everyone had written him off, Wayne Rooney comes up with a pair of magic assists. Have you ever seen such skill? Selection headache for Mourinho here...
