The shift from the Pandemic Game to the fourth round of The Greatest Game has been happening all too smoothly - almost jarringly so - with countries increasingly abandoning all vaccination and test requirements, after having segregated themselves into two neat camps in the Vaccine Proxy War, barely half a year ago. The full list includes many pretty-advanced nations ranging from Austria and Ireland to Switzerland and the United Kingdom, mind, so one might wonder about what the current accepted "science" on the coronavirus is. Perhaps some of these states have recognized the lines they were unwittingly drawing around themselves, from how the WHO's globohomo pandemic treaty proposal has drawn heavy pushback - for now. ![]() I'm rubber, you're glue, tariffs bounce off me and stick to you! (Sources: fortune.com, theguardian.com) The most glaring exceptions to this ongoing dismantling of the vaccine blocs would be our Cold War II All-Stars, the U.S. of A and China; the former just perhaps at least partly due to their de-facto control of "the best vaccines" previously counting as "extra medals" to encourage compliance, and as for the latter, I frankly don't understand what they're trying to achieve with their lockdowns, unless it's some convoluted scheme to crash the world economy. Well, as previously pointed out on this blog, any poor schmuck can assert the obvious truth; whereas, it takes real power to tell a barefaced falsehood, and expect it to be accepted by the audience. This is what we're seeing, then, with both main players insisting that they are not after a new Cold War, while frantically moving pieces around the board. Much of that latest action has been taking place in the Pacific, with China protesting that the IPEF is intended to decouple members from them (like, duh), while also asserting that it's low on actual content (also reasonably true, at least currently; here, we have got to award Mahathir some troll points, for his suggestion that America should invite China to the IPEF). In response, China has been upping their island-state recruitment after their landmark Solomon Islands deal, but appear to have had their full pact intercepted by Team Blue, who have drafted Fiji from under their noses (for an undisclosed fee), though China might have picked up a few extras such as Timor-Leste. America's further response would be to declare the world's largest naval exercise (RIMPAC) in the region, with us truly roped in, to which Iran has countered with a single currency for the Shanghai Pact. Things are sure moving fast, folks. Our PM's latest opinion appears to be that we're all good friends with Blue Team and Red Team here, there's no need for an Asian NATO, and how about you chaps visit and have a nice chat during the Shangri-La Dialogue, with free flow of kopi? And, to be frank, he's probably still wary of the backlash and snubs from China's end, after sticking his neck out a little too eagerly for the eventually-failed TPP, against the OBOR. I do concur that more dialogue is ideal, and consider myself pretty cosmopolitan in outlook, in the sense that I'm personally all for free trade here - Merlion has wares, if you have coin and all that. Heck, please do consider laundering an amount of money that everybody can accept as socially appropriate too while you're here, after we went through the trouble of building those world-class ![]() Trade might not guarantee against war (non-intuitively), but it's not that bad as insurance (Source: r/polandball) [To be continued again...] Next: Literally Jiao Wei
