Encounter The Dragon

There's been minimal visiting this year (did chance upon one recently-dispossessed cat, though, apparently also beset by overzealous cleaners). This gives us the opportunity to return to the stage of Twilight Struggle: New Moon, where the programme has basically been frozen in stasis since December:

End of Turn 14, Cleanup Phase

The WEF declares the tournament... reopened!
[N.B. Sure, "conspiracy theory", but with that outfit and soundtrack?]

The audience has definitely remained engaged with various global(ist) organizations only too eager to spread their propaganda messaging, and the World Economic Forum has been holding forth on a seminar about the ongoing Great Reset, which has understandably been sold out after their prescient Event 201 pandemic roleplaying game, that involved the spread of a "novel zoonotic coronavirus transmitted from bats". Just to reiterate, this has absolutely nothing to do with the COVID-19 outbreak that ravaged the world some months later... but can you actually blame the attendees for signing up as not to miss out on any possible developments, just in case?

Ah, on to the boring accounting. Team Blue's protesting Team Red's claimed four Required Military Operations from their African adventures, but wait - the Reds have just realized that they had not been granted Control of Hungary (still 1/3) from their Ops in Action Round 2, with Orban's government barely hanging on against heavy NATO pressure, in blocking Sweden from the alliance. It's a bit of a wonder how they have stonewalled that and EU aid for Ukraine for this long! After some hushed backroom deliberations with the referees, the players have mutually agreed not to pursue either case further, with DEFCON remaining a perilous 2, and Team Blue 6 VP ahead.

Russia vs. Ukraine/NATO has a viewership problem

Since we have to wait a little longer for the seminar to conclude anyway, a quick status update on the many happenings about the world; Zelensky has just admitted that the Ukraine front is at a stalemate a few days ago, which if a genuine realization, would make him perhaps one of the last to acknowledge that particular reality. However, as asserted here almost a year ago, it was never really about Ukraine anyway, and while this is not to downplay the sacrifice of the brave soldiers - or suffering of the civilians - involved, it has to be said that neither side (i.e. Team Red/Russia on one, Team Blue/NATO on the other) are serious. Trust me, you'll know when they actually get serious.

The WEF has finally surrendered the lectern, and a short eulogy for Dr. Kissinger follows, by the way with our PM having personally paid his respects at a memorial service in New York last month. The Twilight Struggle does not move before it is ready, my friends, and what's waiting a month or two for a titan like Kissinger? But time and tide waits indefinitely for no man, and with the gameboard restored to centrestage, Turn Fifteen is finally, finally about to happen, any time right now! The lights go off again, a single spotlight illuminates the table, and a spiky-haired young man in an impressive open-collared trenchcoat marches carelessly towards it, card in hand. With the prevalence of geriatrics in geopolitics, I suppose it's refreshing to have a fresh face at the table once in a while...

"I summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon!"

The arena goes perfectly silent.

Ah, I see, yes, yes. The Yu-Gi-Oh! convention is two halls down, to the left. No trouble at all, son, easy mistake to make with all the cosplayers here for the WEF seminar. And just between me and you, that was an illegal summon, in general you try to get it into the graveyard first. Good lad, have fun!

And, from the back of the hall, a lone voice intones:

红斗蒸蓝国
春来发歧姿
愿君多采撷
此物最相厮
